Satellite Symposia: Embracing Targeted Medical Therapies in Neurofibromatosis Type 1 — Practical Principles for the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurse (SYM2)

This activity will review NF1 diagnostic criteria, describe the complex pathophysiology that makes NF1-associated plexiform neurofibromas (PNs) difficult to treat, and summarize trial data for targeted medical therapies in NF1. Patient cases will showcase the pivotal role of the pediatric hem/onc nurse in managing NF1-associated tumors with these novel agents.

Non-CNE Symposia

Non-CE Satellite Symposia: Optimizing Iron Chelation in Sickle Cell Disease Management From Pediatric Through Adult Care: East Coast and West Coast Perspectives (SYM6)

Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) often have organ damage starting in early childhood and progressing with age. Blood transfusions, which are a mainstay for treating stroke and other complications of SCD, may lead to iron overload that can cause further organ damage. Two nurse practitioner experts from academic centers on the east coast and west coast will discuss the importance of managing patients holistically throughout their entire life span to help prevent progressive organ damage due to SCD and iron overload. In addition, they will share their best practices for early monitoring, iron chelation, and transitioning patients from pediatric to adult care.
