Melissa Jo Powell is an Advanced Education Specialist at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital Simulation Center. As a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator, she is responsible for all components of simulation activities, using high fidelity simulator manikins and actors to portray patients. She serves as a consultant for multiple groups in simulation scenario design, curriculum integration, operations and program development.
Another large component of her job is improving quality and patient safety. She is working within different committees and advisory councils to solve problems related to education, human factors, clinical processes, standards and policies. She also currently organizes and develops education programs, courses and events for physicians, nurses, respiratory therapist, and pharmacists throughout the organization. She has been in healthcare since 1987, working first as a surgery orderly, then as an emergency medical technician, then nursing assistant, and then a registered nurse in critical care areas. She is a board certified registered nurse with 21 years’ experience including multiple publications and presentations
