Kari Wheeler, BSN, RN, BMTCN®, CPHON®, CPN, is a clinical nurse in the Pediatric Infusion Clinic at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute in Falls Church, Virginia. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from DeSales University.
Kari is currently pursuing her Doctor of Nursing Practice in Acute Care Pediatrics with a certificate of Teaching in Nursing and Health Profession at the University of Maryland’s School of Nursing. Mrs. Wheeler also has a Bachelor of Science in psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. Kari has had the pleasure of being a pediatric nurse for over seven years and her previous experience includes time at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Clinical Center at the National Institutes of Health. For the last five years, Kari has worked in pediatric hematology and oncology with a focus in leukemia and lymphoma, experimental stem cell transplants, immunotherapy, and clinical research.
Mrs. Wheeler is an active member of the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) and the Society of Pediatric Nurses. Kari’s leadership experience includes spending three years serving as the local chapter president of the National Capital Chapter of APHON in the DC, MD, and VA areas and she now serves as a national representative of APHON as a member of the Local Chapter, Steering Council, and Advocacy Committees. Furthermore, Mrs. Wheeler was also honored by APHON to receive the Nurse Internship in Washington (NIWI) Scholarship which provides nurses with the opportunity to learn how to influence health care through legislative and regulatory processes within Congress. Additionally, Kari lends her expertise as an item writer for the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation’s CPHON® exam.
