Basis of inquiry: Clinician education and expertise in palliative care varies widely across pediatric oncology programs, creating disparities in accessing and delivering much needed services to children and their families. Providing interprofessional, onsite team training, as well as institution-wide support for ongoing palliative care education is critical to improving quality of life for pediatric oncology care recipients.
Purpose/Objectives: To describe an evidence-based practice approach for delivering comprehensive interprofessional palliative care education for pediatric oncology clinicians.
Methods: A qualitative evidence synthesis was performed using three databases: PubMed, CINAHL, and Embase. Out of 308 articles initially yielded, nine were selected based on the following inclusion criteria: use of an interdisciplinary education model and pertinent educational models from the adult, non-oncologic population literature. Essential components for program delivery and methods for evaluating the impact of education on clinical practice were assessed.
Findings or Outcomes: Key strategies for delivering an interprofessional palliative care program that is congruent with evidence-based practice in pediatric oncology include train–the–trainer models, quality-improvement initiatives, interdisciplinary workshops, simulation, debriefing, case discussions, and didactic sessions taught virtually or in-person by interprofessional content experts. Evaluating the impact of palliative care education on pediatric oncology practice is achieved through eliciting patient and family feedback regarding providers’ palliative care competency, developing and implementing standardized measures to analyze the effect of palliative care education on care delivery, and analyzing the cost-effectiveness of palliative care education on outcomes of care.
