Karen Madigan is a Clinical Level IV inpatient pediatric oncology/hematology/BMT staff nurse at Hackensack University Medical Center. She has been a pediatric oncology/hematology/BMT nurse on the inpatient unit for 13 years. She has preceptored many new staff RN's and SNE's, and developed an orientation manual along with a roadmap.
She has mentored other staff to pursue higher Clinical Levels and to achieve certification. She participates in many councils both unit based and hospital wide; and has currently been the Chair of the Unit Based Council for the past 5 years. She has worked on numerous performance improvement projects, which include developing a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/BMT specific Acuity Scale, initiating the use of the BARF scale on the unit, developing/revising the current process for central line care to decrease infections rate, and developing a research project for the use of aromatherapy to treat nausea/vomiting in our patient population. She is the unit’s Falls Champion and has developed a Pediatric Falls FAQ. She has also completed as the PI, a Children’s Hospital nurse driven research study, “To what degree does nursing attire influence the patient’s perception of the care."
