Caring for Pediatric Patients with Malignant Bone Tumors: The Advanced Practice Nurse’s Perspective (213)

12:15 – 1:15 pm Thursday, September 3

Children, adolescents, and young adults with malignant bone tumors require expert and specialized care beginning at diagnosis and continuing throughout therapy and beyond. Each patient’s treatment plan is likely to include systemic chemotherapy plus radiation and/or surgery to achieve local tumor control.

Caring for this unique patient population involves managing pain, coordinating a diagnostic and staging workup, treating adverse and late effects of therapy, outlining a plan for local control, ensuring adequate rehabilitation in the setting of mobility impairment, providing extensive education, and guiding families as they navigate a new normal. An array of specialists (including nurses, oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, orthopedists, social workers, child-life specialists, pharmacists, and physical/occupational therapists) offer services and expertise along the patient’s journey through cancer treatment, underscoring the importance of promoting seamless communication across the interprofessional team. The advanced practice provider, an expert clinician, and specialist in pediatric nursing is uniquely suited to play a significant role in providing direct patient care, educating and counseling families, and ensuring effective interprofessional collaboration. The goal of this educational session is to expand learners’ knowledge regarding the presentation, diagnosis, and management of pediatric malignant bone tumors. The presenters—a solid tumor nurse practitioner, a radiation oncology nurse practitioner, and an orthopedic surgery nurse practitioner—will provide unique insight and clinical pearls as they discuss the critical role of the advanced practice nurse in ensuring patients receive safe, effective, and quality care. Through the eyes of the advanced practice nurse and via case study analysis, the learner will leave the presentation better equipped to guide and educate patients and families through malignant bone tumor therapy and beyond.
